Michael Stephen Portnoy (born April 20, 1967) is an American musician best known as the drummer, backing vocalist and co-founder of the progressive metal band Dream Theater. He was born in Long Beach, New York, and is Jewish. His father, Howard Portnoy (1940–2009), worked as a radio DJ, which exposed him early to a wide range of music. His mother, Andrea Leone, died in 1984 in a private plane crash off the Atlantic City coastline. Portnoy received his first drum kit at the age of 11 from his grandfather and developed his skills largely as a self-taught drummer, later studying music theory in high school while playing in local bands such as Rising Power and Inner Sanctum, where he recorded independent releases. After receiving a scholarship to Berklee College of Music in Boston, he met John Petrucci and John Myung, with whom he formed the band Majesty, later renamed Dream Theater. The group left Berklee and began building their career in progressive metal. Dream Theater is known for its complex compositions and musicianship, and Portnoy became a central figure in songwriting, production and live performance. During his initial tenure, he co-produced several albums with Petrucci, including “Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory” through “Black Clouds and Silver Linings”.
