Born in Nottingham, UK, 5th January 1962. Studied music composition and technologies at Dartington College of Arts with Frank Denyer, Edward Cowie, David Prior and Gavin Bryars. Worked with French-Canadian Acousmatic composer Christian Calon, and with English composer Andrew Bentley at the Sibelius Academy Centre of Music & Technology in Helsinki, Finland. Commissioned by Derby Shakespeare Theatre Company to compose the incidental music for their production of The Tempest, to mark the 70th anniversary of Cornwall’s Minack Theatre in 2002. Michael Neil began composing as early as the late1970s, but it was the 1980s when he established his reputation and this was consolidated during the 1990s with a succession of albums on Cleve Littlewood’s ‘Electronical Dreams’ label, inspired by his native Cornwall in the far south west of Britain. Of these Cornubia was the most notable, earning for him a reputation for grand sweeping orchestral electronics and otherworldly ambience. In 2000 Neu Harmony Records – www.synthmusicdirect.com - released Towards the Unknown Region, which demonstrated his growing interest in astronomical themes and a move towards more spacious textures and timbres in the synthesizer repertoire. In 2004 Neil graduated from Dartington College of Arts with a degree in music composition and technology that helped to define the next stage in his compositional exploration using state of the art software.
