“Mercy, the Sexton” you say, “what an odd name for a band.” Well, whatever. Mercy, the Sexton is a five-piece alt-pop-synth-rock band from St. John’s, Newfoundland. Featuring siblings Luke and Duncan Major on guitar/vocals and keyboards, brother-from-another-mother Mat “Chewy” Lacombe on bass, former flatmate Jon Hynes on lead guitar, and Jon’s soulmate Jamie March on drums, the boys are tight. Their sound is related to the great tradition of St. John’s indie rock, but also reflects their affection for new wave and 80s pop, and the experience of growing up with a father who loves Bruce Springsteen. Local scenesters have described their tunes as “three minute power pop songs with hooks-a-plenty”. Formed in March 2007, the band has developed a dedicated following in the St. John’s club circuit, sharing the stage with popular local acts Mark Bragg, Blair Harvey, Trailer Camp and Pathological Lovers, along with Toronto’s The Hidden Cameras. In November they took to the home studio to make their debut record with producer Jody Richardson (Thomas Trio and the Red Albino, Fur Packed Action, The Pathological Lovers). Another Month was completed in early April, mixed by Craig McConnell at Greenpail Studio in Toronto, and released on April 25th. The boys are currently taking their first crack at the Canadian touring circuit with gigs in Sydney, Sudbury and everywhere in between.
