If the artistic output reflects the lifestory of an artist, then this girl already has quite a bit to tell. Born and raised in Tianjin – southeastern from Bejing, fourth biggest city by urban population in China – Meng got in touch with music early like many of her generation’s Chinese only child. She started the journey by playing classical on the piano at the age of four. In her teenage years she moved to Switzerland with her family – a turning point that would not only bring a different culture and multiple new languages to dive into but also new territory for musical development. It was in highschool band workshops where she discovered music beyond the classical world and her singing voice. Soon she began to write own songs. Several dozens of songs and a few years later Meng released the debut album during her undergraduate studies in political science. „New Start“ (Longplay Records/Musikvertrieb, April 2008) contains a well-chosen collection of songs to tell a story of a young girl growing up in the foreign and the unknown. A story filled with usual and unusual problems in this process of growing; aiming to find solutions and last but not least: the own identity. With „New Start“ Meng went on tour with her band and solo 2008 and 2009 in Switzerland and Germany. Playing the material live brought in new impulse of how her kind of acoustic-jazz-soul rooted singer/songwriter music could evolve to new directions.
