Artist
Meg Johnson (born 30 July 1927) is an English actress who currently plays the role of Pearl Ladderbanks in ITV's popular soap opera Emmerdale. Prior to joining Emmedale, Johnson was a part of the now-axed UK soap Brookside, playing Brigid McKenna for three years. In the early 1980s she also played the part of Eunice Gee in Coronation Street, a role she briefly reprised in 1999. In November 1997, she was in the original cast of the London revival of Chicago playing Matron 'Mama' Morton, the prison warder, for more than a year. She can be heard on the London Cast Recording of Chicago, singing "When You're Good To Mama", "Me And My Baby" and "Class". # Meg Johnson: A Career Worth Examining Johnson's work across British television and theatre reveals a performer comfortable with complexity and moral ambiguity. Her roles—from the morally compromised characters in *Brookside* and *Coronation Street* to the pragmatic authority figure of Matron Morton in the 1997 *Chicago* revival—demonstrate a consistent interest in characters who operate within systems rather than against them. What distinguishes her career is a quiet refusal of sentimentality; she brings intelligence and texture to supporting roles that lesser actors might flatten. Her participation in the *Chicago* cast recording documents a particular moment in British musical theatre history. For those interested in how character actors build careers across decades
