about

Matthias Reymann (also Reimann / Reyman) (c. 1550 – after 1595) Matthias Reymann was a German composer and professional musician active in the second half of the sixteenth century, whose career is reconstructed almost entirely from the circulation of his music in printed anthologies rather than from detailed archival biography. He belongs to the broad Central European cohort of composers working in the wake of the Franco-Netherlandish tradition, adapting its contrapuntal techniques to the vernacular and sacred repertories cultivated in German-speaking lands. Reymann’s surviving works appear principally in late-sixteenth-century printed collections, especially German and Franco-German chanson and Lied anthologies, where his name occurs alongside better-known contemporaries. His music reflects the stylistic norms of the period: clear melodic profiles, careful text setting, and moderate imitative writing, well suited both to courtly domestic music-making and to the cultivated urban amateur market that these prints increasingly served. Although no secure documentation of his appointments or patrons survives, the fact that his works were printed indicates a level of professional recognition and suggests that he was integrated into the commercial and cultural networks of music printing that linked cities such as Nuremberg, Munich, and Strasbourg. Like many composers of his generation whose personal histories remain obscure, Matthias Reymann is best understood through the afterlife
