Matthias Arfmann was born in Bremen in 1962. After studying the piano and singing he founded the legendary underground band Kastrierte Philosophen (Castrated Philosophers) in 1984. With the beginning of the hip hop boom in the early 1990s, Arfmann became one of the most sought-after music producers of this kind, working with acts such as Patrice, Jan Delay and Absolute Beginner. It was his interest in electronic rhythms and the way in which the sound of traditional instruments and vocals can be electronically processed that led him to the electronic variety of reggae, dub.
