Singer-songwriter Matthew John (born Matthew John Dorman, San Diego, California) is currently based in Helsinki, Finland. Matthew John grew up in Santa Barbara, California, where he earned a PhD in ethnomusicology at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Prior to completion of his doctoral studies, Matthew earned a master's degree in music at San Diego State University. He regularly performs solo and in band format (sometimes as Matthew John Band). As a performer, Matthew has played in a variety of groups covering many genres, including Middle Eastern music (plays the Ud), Balinese and Javanese gamelan, American traditional folk music, Finnish traditional folk music, Afro-Cuban percussion, classical, jazz, folk-rock, and psychedelic rock. In recent years, Matthew has focused on urban-folk and psych-folk songwriting, performance and production.
