Roland looked mildly bemused. Barring faults, it seemed that the volume of this guy's voice had broken the diaphragm of the second Neumann U87 microphone of the day. This was proving to be a costly session... Track back several months and Matthew was in a studio again, this time recording his debut EP, having graduated from Cambridge university. It was this EP, produced by Julian Simmons (The Guillemots, Ed Sheeren, The Special K's), which first brought Matthew's voice - impassioned with an honest quality, ranging from a soft intimacy at its lower register, to a powerhouse at the top, often punctuated with falsetto – to the attention of the Tears For Fears frontman. When you listen to Acheson's music – an intelligent blend of bass-heavy contemporary groove, accented with vintage electronica, ethereal guitar lines, and massive, hooky choruses – it's easy to hear how this vocal range is effectively employed. But it's not until you draw yourself up close, and appreciate the attention to lyrical detail, humanistic and austere, that one's impression of the true scale of the music is put into perspective. The forthcoming release of “Monkeyland” sees the first collaboration between Acheson and 25 Hour Convenience Store – an independent label owned by Gary Powell of The Libertines. Acheson provided his vocals and co-produced this dubstep-influenced cover of the 80's classic, bringing The Chameleons' masterpiece bass-kicking and synth-screaming into the next millennium.
