Matt Malone was born in Germany to a U.S. military family. At age four, when his parents noticed his steady interest in a two octave toy electronic keyboard, they found him a piano teacher who was astonished at what he wanted to learn. Instead of “Mary Had a Little Lamb” and other children’s songs, Malone was determined to play tunes he heard on the radio. Because of his father’s career, Malone moved frequently while he was growing up. With each move came a new piano teacher with a different approach to helping him learn to play classical music. Throughout his childhood and teens he also continued to practice playing by ear and creating his own music. At age thirteen, Malone began applying his piano experience to guitar, playing only by ear. Preferring direct experimentation to theory, Matt sometimes wasn’t sure what guitar chords he was playing since he had figured them out by trial and error. Having no formal guitar training, he was surprised when people started asking him for guitar lessons and performances. Malone has been labeled in the “Singer-Songwriter” genre, however his true genre could be considered a fusion of folk, rock, and even a hint of bluegrass. His first album was released in late 2011 titled "Withdrawn." Each song on the release offers a glimpse into a larger story of the narrator’s progress and regression. Malone claims that the stories are far from fabricated, and describes the songs as introspective versions of his past. User-contributed text
