Groove and Heart define the sound of Matt Curney's 2008 EP, Strange Education. His confessional lyrics sit side-by-side with energetic, feverish drum beats, and rich, rolling harmonies. It's a combination that captivates the ear instantly. Growing up as a pianist in St. Paul MN, Matt Curney honed a virtuosic technique in classical music before changing paths to pursue jazz piano at McNally Smith College of Music. He was recruited by a leading Cruise line to perform on board a ship in the heart the Caribbean. It was there, in the total isolation of the Atlantic Ocean, rocking back and forth on a showband grand piano, that he composed the music for "Strange Education". Once back on land, with a notebook of songs and a renewed passion for songwriting, he hooked up with two friends from college, drummer-prodigy Byron Johnson-Blanchard, and bass funk-master Blake Tanberk. It wasn’t long before their combined musical chemistry started to draw the attention from peers and professors, and in January of 2008, all three guys went into the studio to record. Their new EP, Strange Education, is a 6 track song-cycle about lessons learned from relationships, traveling far away, and the unexpected turns a life can take in just one year.
