Mateusz Smoczyński is a violinist, composer, and bandleader who moves freely between musical genres. He is the co-founder of Atom String Quartet and New Trio, leads his own quintet, and performs as a duo with cellist Stephan Braun. He has appeared on major stages around the world, both as a soloist and as part of various ensembles, collaborating with artists such as Branford Marsalis, Rabih Abou-Khalil, Markus Stockhausen, Paquito D’Rivera, Tomasz Stańko, Zbigniew Namysłowski, Bobby McFerrin, Anna Maria Jopek, Leszek Możdżer, and the NDR Big Band. As a soloist, he has performed with the most important Polish orchestras. In recent years, Smoczyński has successfully devoted himself to symphonic composition. He is the author of five violin concertos with orchestra, including Adam’s Apple for violin (2018), 2PiX for violin and saxophone (2021), performed together with Branford Marsalis, and Fallen Angel (2022), written for Janusz Olejniczak. His discography includes over 100 albums, among them a solo record and a duo album with Joachim Kühn (Speaking Sound, ACT Music, 2020), recognized by DownBeat magazine as one of the most important releases of the year. In 2024, his first album of symphonic works, Adam’s Apple (Warner Music), was released.
