Matchbook Romance was a post-hardcore and emo band from Poughkeepsie, New York and were originally known as Fizzlewink and then The Getaway. The band formed in 1997, consisting of Andrew Jordan (vocals & guitar), Ryan Kienle (bass) and Jon Dunham (drums). This line up changed constantly throughout the years before they picked on the name Matchbook Romance. Initially, PJ Manzo (who will later join the band River's End) was their original lead guitarist, he joined the band in 1999, and a year after, Adam Bock, then replaced Jon Dunham in July 2000, with Adam, the band begun recording their first album titled "Who's Listening" (2001), this was an independent release and was self-released when the band was called Fizzlewink. A few months after this release, Ryan "Judas" DePaolo would join the band as third guitarist. In August 2001, they announced the departure of Adam Bock who was then replaced by Aaron Stern, this line up change also marked the beginning of a new musical direction for the band which prompted them to change their name to The Getaway, during this period they would record demos and write early versions of songs that would later be featured on their professional debuts as Matchbook Romance. The band was contacted by Brett Gurewitz of Epitaph for a record deal and soon after the news of them signing with Epitaph came to light, Canadian based Pop-Punk band The Getaway decided to take legal action about the band's name.
