Artist
Marko Melkon (surname: Alemsherian; Greek: Μάρκος Μελκόν), also known as ‘Markos with the oud’, was an Armenian musician born in Asia Minor in 1895 or 1899. He emigrated to the USA from Istanbul. A polyglot, fluent in Armenian, Greek and Turkish, Marko recorded songs in all these languages, helped and supported many emigrant musicians from the Levant, and became a major figure of the USA rembetiko scene. Marko had a long career: he is reported to have appeared on stage as late as 1971. He passed away in 1975.
