The traditional music of South Italy and Mediterranean Europe is preserved through the music of accordionist, ethnomusicologist, and teacher Mario Salvi. In addition to two solo albums -- Effetti Personali in 1988 and Caldera in 1997 -- Salvi has worked with several Italian traditional groups including , Teatro Gruppo, and Terra Franca. A member of Sinti from 1981 until 1984, he developed his own sound by combining Italian folk music with elements of Balkan, French, and Irish music. Salvi didn't become involved with music until shortly after his 21st birthday. Initially playing tambourine in 1977, he taught himself to play the accordion two years later. While studying ethnomusicology at the University of Rome from 1978 to 1980, he conducted field studies in Naples, Avellino, and Salerno. He sharpened his skills while studying with Ambrogio Sparagna near the school of popular music of the Circle Gianni Bosio.
