Mariko Ishii was born in Tokyo, Japan and began playing the piano when she was five years old. She started singing before that. Around the age of seventeen, she began writing her own songs. In 1996, Mariko relocated to Reno, Nevada. This was quite a change from Tokyo and influenced her songwriting style. Half of the songs on "Whiserping Time" were written in Japan, the rest were written in America. The songs are mostly about love, thoughts of home, and having faith in yourself even if you sometimes don't. Things most of us think about.
