Portland, Maine's Marie Stella came together after singer/bassist/songwriter Sydney Bourke got fed up with being a solo singer/songwriter (after being in the bands Satellite Lot, Isadora, and others) and set out to start her own band with the help of Bryan Bruchman, a recent Brooklyn-to-Portland transplant, formerly of the notoriously noisy post-punk group Man In Gray. Matthew Erickson helped to complete the core of the band early on, before a slew of drummers and backup singers landed the group with permanent drummer Max Heinz (and no backup singers).
