about

Marcantonio Romano (c.1552-1636) was a 17th Century Dalmatian composer. In the late 16th and the early 17th centuries the cathedral churches of Split and Hvar fostered an active local school of composers ( Ivan Lukačić , ?1587 – 1648 ; Tomaso Cecchini , c. 1582 – 1644 ; Marcantonio Romano , c. 1552 – 1636 ), whose music reflected the characteristics of early monody and the Venetian style of the time. Paskoj Primović's 1617 translation of Rinuccini's Euridice is probably the earliest translation into any language of an Italian opera libretto.
