There are at least four projects called Mandigo. 1. Mandingo was the seventies exotica brain child of British orchestra leader Geoff Love (1917β1991). Having played in Easy Listening bands such as the poetically named Manuel And The Music Of The Mountains before, he decided to go into a totally different direction. With the help of producer Norman Newell (1919β2004), he gathered session musicians around him, got hold of talented song writers and unleashed a highly explosive mixture of African rhythms, progressive rock, funk and jazz with electronic devices. While Geoff Love achieved this on every Mandingo album, it is the project's 1972 debut The Primeval Rhythm Of Life where this concept is brought to life 2. Mandingo is one of Bill Laswell's many projects. A world / funk / jazz fusion experiment, Mandingo are a supergroup of sorts featuring legendary Gambian griot Foday Musa Suso on kora, percussion, and vocals; Laswell on bass; and Jeff Bova and Nicky Skopelitis on keyboards and programming. The result of mixing their disparate styles is an upbeat Afro-funk sound perfectly suited for dance floors from New York City to West Africa. Eclectic and accessible. 3.
