Artist
Mammary, begun in 2009, is the solo project of brunette balladeer Mallory Watje, whose irresistible siren songs have cause the shipwrecks of many wayward sailors on the rocky crags and cliffs of Isla Vista, CA. Tape hiss and rhetorical questions punctuate her self-released debut LP (with the literal title “November 2009”); Watje sends melody lines in divergent directions, complimenting her plucking (guitar, once banjo) or pounding (piano: heavy sustain) with resonant vocal harmonies. The album, beginning with a series of metaphysical ponderings—“Ain't it funny how things change,/ ain't it lovely the way that we take up space”— then meanders through bridges, congested streets, and healthy appetites. Watje, ever musically active, also splits time between Girl Band and Backpack. Michelle Shofet (Glass Cake), her Girl Band bandmate, is featured on the song “Eat” from “November 2009.” Her music, to date, can be found at http://destructochard.org/mammary/ User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.
