Mamdouh El Gebaly is an Egyptian oud virtuoso and composer, born on 1 July 1967 in Port Said, Egypt. He holds a Bachelor’s degree from the High Institute of Arabic Music (معهد الموسيقى العربية) in Cairo and has been a prominent figure in the Egyptian solo oud tradition. El Gebaly’s recorded work includes solo projects and contributions to cross-genre albums, such as Egyptian Taqasim, Vol. 1 (1992) and Mozart l’Égyptien 2 (2005) where he appears among other oud players on reinterpretations of Western classical works for oud and Arabic ensemble. As a performer, he is known for blending the expressive solo taqāsīm tradition with ensemble interplay, delivering both nuanced lyrical passages and robust rhythmic interaction. He remains active in teaching and in the Cairo music scene, contributing to both classical and world-fusion oud projects.
