Artist
Mamadata Tavalayev (Russian: Мамадато Таваллоев, born 1935) is a musician from Khorugh, the capital of Gorno-Badakhshan in Tajikistan. He is the Tajik grandmaster of the Pamir setar, a large, long-necked lute. He has taken great pains to improve and modify the instrument by adding missing frets so that the instrument now has 26 frets, giving it a chromatic scale and a range of three octaves. With this improvement the instrument is now able to play melodies of neighbouring countries. There are various western transliterations of his name: Mamadata Tavalloev, Mamadato Tavalloev, Mamadata Tavallaev, Mamad-Atâ Tavalaev, Mamadatā Tavalāyev, etc. User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.
