Artist
Maja Solveig Kjelstrup Ratke is a Norwegian new music / folk / noise / electronics / voice-manipulating composer. The sleevenotes to her album 'River Mouth Echoes' (Tzadik, 2008) point out that her work "ranges from noise infernos and full orchestra to quiet improv and accoustic solos." We can also detect the heavy influences of Berio (especially Visage) and other '60s musique concrete / electronic composition. In 2001 she was the first composer ever to receive the Arne Nordheim Distinction Award. Her solo album "Voice" (as Maja Ratkje, produced in collaboration with Jazzkamer) got an award of distinction at Prix Ars Electronica in 2003. In 2016 she released her album Crepuscular Hour. Furthermore she is a member of Spunk (Rune Grammofon) and noise duo Fe-Mail. She has collaborated with Jaap Blonk, Ikue Mori, Otomo Yoshihide, Wolf Eyes, Matmos, Lasse Marhaug, Jason Forrest (aka Donna Summer, the Oslo Sinfonietta, Kim Hiorthoy, Ulver and many others.
