The album was recorded and mixed in Jersey houses, in fits and starts over the course of 2008. The seven songs explore the forces that make us stagnate or take flight, the isolation within relationships, and the reality of plans changed. Islands Are Born music and lyrics were written by Maia Macdonald. Production by Maia Macdonald and Graham Galatro. Recorded, mixed and mastered by Graham Galatro. Maia Macdonald began her musical journey at age 7 after she was given a drum on the streets of Barranquilla, Colombia. Soon after, she taught herself to play the guitar using an old Spanish classical guitar forgotten in the attic, while simultaneously listening to Brazilian music on repeat - through David Byrne’s “Beliza Tropical” compilation. Maia wrote her first songs in elementary school, but didn’t begin her performance career until age 16, when she regularly played at local cafes and open mic nights in Northern New Jersey. At Wellesley College, she performed regularly for enthusiastic and devoted audiences. She fell deeply in love with the music of Haiti and traveled to Port-Au-Prince to study folkloric drumming then came back to play lead drum with the Yanvalou Haitian drum and dance troupe. After graduation from college, Maia returned to Brooklyn New York, recovered from a devastating tendon injury, entered the music scene wit
