Magic People is a modern rock band based in Boston, Massachusetts. They eschew the guitar in favor of futuristic keyboards, and their songs bend toward angular cries of anxiety leavened with beauteous flights of fancy. The band is fronted by a winking maniac, who forgoes traditional singing with proclamations that have more in common with fire and brimstone than with rhythm and blues. The experimental nature of the band is rooted in a meticulously sloppy rhythm section, which can appeal to the mind and thighs in equal proportions, and always aim to excite a youthful ear. In 2005, John Manson and David Utzinger of the Young Sexy Assassins had grown disenchanted with the inertia of that band and decided to form a sleeker unit for the sole purpose of touring Europe, with John on drums and Dave playing keys. Al Deaderick was enlisted as a backup synth player and they played a few sparse and bleak shows until they decided to add Winston Braman on the bass to fill out the sound and shuck oysters. A brief but successful West Coast tour was attempted and soon after their return, flautist Gabi Aguilar was added to the roster, in the hopes of appealing to a smoother audience. It was with this line-up that they recorded Keen Whips I'd Wear As Rubies. Though unsuccessful at achieving adult contemporary airplay, they soon embarked their promised tour of Europe and were well received by several Frenchmen.
