Artist
Madcap Laughs was a music project by Belarusian musician and producer Egor Gerasenko (also known as qumcl, qulicker, qu12). Active between 2022 and 2024, the project marked Gerasenko’s early exploration of experimental electronic soundscapes. The name Madcap Laughs references Syd Barrett’s 1970 solo album, reflecting a spirit of fragile psychedelia and raw emotional honesty. However, Gerasenko reinterpreted the concept through his own lens, blending influences from lo-fi, ambient textures, industrial noises, and DIY aesthetics. Madcap Laughs combined lo-fi roots with experimental electronics, often using tape hiss, field recordings, and distorted textures. The music frequently dealt with themes of mental illness, memory, isolation, and surrealism, presenting a deeply personal diary-like quality. By mid-2024, Gerasenko gradually shifted to working exclusively under the qumcl alias, where his music further evolved into experimental electronic directions such as lo-fi IDM, jungle, drill’n’bass, and glitch. Nonetheless, Madcap Laughs remains an important chapter in his artistic journey, capturing the raw, intimate essence of his early work.
