The early music vocal ensemble Lumen Valo from Helsinki, Finland is one of the leading nordic ensembles, especially acclaimed for its tonal clarity and subtle readings of early and contemporary music. The ensemble made its debut in February 1993. It has concentrated on the polyphonic vocal music of the Renaissance but makes frequent detours into both medieval and contemporary music. Lumen Valo has been regarded as largely responsible for the wide-spread enhusiasm in early music vocal polyphony in Finland. In its hometown Helsinki Lumen Valo performs frequently in the famous Uspenski orthodox cathedral attracting wide audiences live and via TV and radio - especially with the ensemble´s "Mysterium" christmas concerts. Helsinki must be one of the only western cities, where its possible to hear mainly lutheran performers singing catholic polyphony in a greek-orthodox cathedral! Current members of the ensemble are Riikka Noreila, alto Aaro Haapaniemi, tenor Hanna Graeffe, alto Juha Suomalainen, bass Kari Turunen, tenor Titta Lampela, soprano Juha-Pekka Mitjonen, barytone Laura Salovaara, soprano http://www.lumenvalo.fi/ User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.
