From his window as a boy in Bahia, Luiz could hear the rhythms of candomble ceremonies next door. Growing up in a musical family, he gravitated to guitar, and studied classical theory and technique formally, but never settled on a particular style: from rock bands in the 1970s, we moved into jazz, bossa nova, and the wide-ranging field of MPB (Brazilian pop). Best known as a guitar sideman for Caetano Veloso and Cassia Eller, he's also worked with Gal Costa, Gilberto Gil, Jussara Silveira, and many other major musicians in the Brazilian pantheon. Also a record producer, composer, and arranger, he has released a solo album of jazzy MPB instrumentals.
