Luisa Castellani is an artist who is highly valued for the extreme flexibility of her vocal technique, perfected with teachers like Gina Cigna and Dorothy Dorow. This quality, together with her interest in musical research - in particular the contemporary repertoire - has made her the favourite choice of many composers. Luciano Berio invited her to sing in the new edition of his Calmo, in Sequenza III and in Folksongs and created for her the role of Ada in Outis (Teatro alla Scala, 1996). Giacinto Scelsi has also entrusted her with the interpretation of his scores. She has successfully performed and recorded numerous works, including many world premieres, by Berio, Cage, De Pablo, Donatoni, Ferneyhough, Francesconi, Gervasoni, Kurtag, Panni and Pennisi. She has also performed works by leading composers of the historic twentieth century - from Debussy to Bartók, from Schoenberg to Dallapiccola, from Stravinsky to Webern - under the direction of maestri like Berio, Eötvös, Ferro, Gelmetti, Robertson, Sinopoli and Tamayo. As an opera singer, she has sung in Pennisi's Esequie della Luna and Tristan, Scogna's Anton, Britten's The Turn of the Screw, Berio's Outis and La vera storia, De Pablo's La madre invita a comer, Donatoni's Il velo dissolto at Milan's Teatro alla Scala, Florence's Teatro Comunale and Teatro La Fenice of Venice.
