Artist
Lodovico Fogliano (birth date unknown, about between 1470 and 1480 in Modena; died between 1538 and 1542, place of death unknown) was an Italian music theorist, composer, singer and humanist. Very little is known about his life. He was the younger brother of the Italian composer and organist Giacomo Fogliano. He was a member of the court chapel of Duke Ercole I. d'Este of Ferrera and in 1493 demonstrably singer in the Cathedral Choir of Modena. After Josquin Desprez took the position of court chapel master in Ferrera, he reappeared in the salary lists of the court chapel in 1503 and 1504. There is also a source according to which L. Fogliano as singer of Cappella Giulia on St. Peter performed in Rome in 1513 and 1514. Later, he seems to have stayed in Venice, where he had his only published composition and his theoretical main work printed. At the end of his life, however, we find him again in Modena, as the publisher Caterino Ferri had submitted the printing permission for him rebellious work Refugio de' dubitanti there, which probably did not be printed due to his death.
