Lucy Brown was a funk/metal band from Washington, D. C., active in the late '80s until the death of lead singer Gene Hawkins, of a heroin overdose in 1994 which resulted in the breakup of the band. The original lineup consisted of Scott Llewellyn as lead vocalist and bass guitarist, Luis Peraza Jr. on lead guitar and Chris Neuberg on drums. This initial lineup released an LP on DC area label T. O. G. records in 1988, but with limited distribution it was not a commercial success. Gene Hawkins joined the band in 1991 as lead singer, with Llewellyn staying on bass. Another self titled album was released that year on Megaforce Records, but a lack of sales of that album cost them the contract with Megaforce. The tracks on this second album were often political ("Colorblind", Thoughts (Working Class)"), funky ("Favorite Waste Of Time"), and in one case, sadly prophetic ("It Takes Me Higher"). Llewellyn left the band the next year to be replaced by Jon Papazoglou, and this lineup released "Five Dogs Dead", a six song EP, on Death Rebel Records, based out of Washington, D.C. in late 1993.
