Portuguese composer born in 1890 into a renowned musical family, Luís de Freitas Branco quickly rose to fame with recognition from the respected Vianna da Motta. In 1910 he way studing music in Berlin. One year later he travelled to Paris where he met Claude Debussy and had his first experience with the impressionist movement. His compositions were initially by necessity classical, but later he wrote musical scores that educated and liberated his audience to enjoy romantic concerts. He is fondly remembered as the instrumental influence in the creation and development of modern music in Portugal. He died in 1955, leaving behind a large collection of compositions and many appreciated musical public performances in the memories of his audience. While music teacher Luís de Freitas Branco was considered an outsider by the academics due to his singular teaching methods.
