Based in Ottawa, Ontario, Little Stella is a young group establishing themselves on the Canadian music scene. Initially conceived as a high school talent show act between Watkins, Siwanowicz and Tansley, the trio spent their late high school and early university education playing together in venues around Ottawa. It was with the addition of bass player Zach Ledgerwood where the band found their voice as a quartet, and with time spent learning to play together while fusing their different styles, Little Stella was born. With the Autumn release of their second self-titled EP, the band has proven their sound is rapidly evolving and is much bigger than the days of weekend-only practice. Watkins’ electronic-infused keyboard sound blends fittingly well with James Siwanowicz’s array of different guitar styles. Ledgerwood contributes additional, often textural guitar work, impressively balancing himself between that and his role as the band’s bass player, often employing the use of electronic bass. Lead singer and the band’s drummer Ryan Tansley keeps the beat moving with a wide variety of styles while singing melodic lines, with each member of the band backing him with full harmonies. Performing live, Little Stella shows a surprising attention to detail, without compromising the high energy that is sought by so many show-goers.
