Sundays are ritualistic whether or you attend Church or not. Although not every Sunday started with reading hymns, my mother insisted on a weekly clean up. Yet, the buzzing vacuum was masked by music pumping from the speakers. Our home vibrated with the sounds of legendary musicians ranging from Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie and Maxwell to Lenny Kravitz, Jimmy Hendrix and Prince. I sat for hours’ staring at vinyl, running my fingers over the records amazed that sound was stored in it. Sunday was a day of dedication, admiration and inspiration. Soon Sunday’s rituals leaked in to every day of the week. The private duets performed between me and mom on those Sunday afternoons turned into solo performances in front of my parents. It was me centre stage, or the front of my living room, facing a sold out auditorium filled with fans, maybe it was my mother and father stretched out on the sectional, I sang from the bottom of my gut while paparazzi snapped shots of me doing what I did best. I never performed without my plastic blue and white Fisher Price microphone. My mother had a keen eye for my passion in music. When I was 8 years old she brought me to my first concert. I may not have known it then, but watching Tina Turner perform was historical. I have bragging rights… What I did feel at the time was euphoria and pure adrenaline. Tina Turner had captivated me.
