Artist
Li Min-Xiong, born in 1932 in Sheng County (now Shangyu) in Zhejiang Province, is a distinguished Chinese composer, percussionist and educator known for his pioneering contributions to the development of modern Chinese folk-instrument and percussion repertory. After early training as a percussionist, he joined the Yue Opera Troupe in 1950, and then from 1956 to 1961 studied at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, graduating to become a key figure in Chinese traditional-music pedagogy and composition: he served as dean of the Folk Music Department at the conservatory and was a member of the Folk Music Committee of the Chinese Musicians Association. Among his notable works are percussion-ensemble pieces that blend Chinese rhythmic idioms with orchestral structures, such as Flying Dragon and Jumping Tiger and The Garden of Hundreds of Flowers. Li’s compositions are recognised for their vibrant energy, clear structural logic, and their role in bringing traditional Chinese percussion into concert settings. Over his long career, he has made significant contributions both as a composer and as a mentor to younger generations of Chinese traditional-music specialists.
