Leopold & Loeb is: Akio Katano, Shreyas Bhat, and Seamus Quin Bartlett. Leopold & Loeb got its start in a southside basement in 2006, when Akio and Shreyas began writing songs together; actually, it might be more accurate to say they started writing songs against each other, as every step was a battle between Shreyas' old-school pop instincts and Akio's need for hard edges and unusual changes, a clash that was as much ideological as aesthetic. It was pretty ludicrous, all things considered. Then, as the year drew to a close, they met Seamus, and it all came together. Conflict disappeared - suddenly EVERYTHING was catchy and EVERYTHING was noisy, and a sound emerged, informed by the classics without ever slipping into retro pastiche. Driven by Seamus' constantly-shifting avalanche of percussion, Shreyas and Akio throw down heavy McCartney-vs.-Entwhistle basslines, stabbing chords, and feedback moans, all in the service of tight, melodic songwriting. They took the name of their most infamous classmates (the band formed at UChicago) to be nice to rock critics, who now have the opportunity to write things like "The new Leopold & Loeb album is killer!" "Leopold & Loeb should be fucking executed" and "Leopold & Loeb beat me to death with a chisel and dumped my body in a drainage ditch!" Hells yeah.
