Artist
Leonel Almeida (born 17.05.1952) is a Caboverdean singer from the island of São Vicente. At the age of 17, he launched his musical career as a member of the group Birds, along with guitarist and producer Paulino Vieira. After having recorded covers with a number of other groups, he was drafted in the Portuguese army when he was 20. The experience was a turning point in his life, and he began to sing revolutionary songs. Later, he joined the group Voz de Cabo Verde, where he met legendary saxophonist Luis Morais. The group toured Europe, the United States, and Africa, and recorded a number of albums with Almeida as lead singer. Today, Leonel Almeida lives in Lisbon, where he accepts gigs and spends time on his hobby, African cuisine.
