LEONARDO CORAL (Mexico city, 1962) He studied Composition with Federico Ibarra at the National University’s School of Music (UNAM). He graduated with Honors. He obtained the master degree at UNAM with his symphonic work Ciclo de vida y muerte. Coral is a professor at his Alma Mater and at the “Ollin Yoliztli” School for Music and Dance. His catalogue includes over 100 pieces, ranging from chamber music to pieces for symphony orchestra. His works have been played in Mexico, Europe, USA, Canada, Asia and Latin America. In 2001 and 2010 he became a member of the National System of Artistic Creators. The music of Leonardo Coral has been recorded by prestigious musicians for Quindecim recordings and Urtext digital classics. His symphonic works have been performed by the most important orchestras in Mexico. His work for orchestra Máquina Férrea won the first prize at the National Competition “Melesio Morales” in 2005. Another of his works, Alegorías, won the 2006 National Contest for Youth Symphony Orchestra. In 2007 he won the SACM (Mexican Society of Authors and Composers) prize with his orchestral work Animales Míticos. In 2010 OFUNAM premiered Águila Real. María Teresa Frenk, Mauricio Náder, Krisztina Deli, Gonzalo Gutierrez, Omar Hernández-Hidalgo and Juan Carlos Laguna have played his concertos for piano, viola, and guitar.
