Layne Redmond is an American musician and scholar specializing in percussion, specifically with frame drums from around the world. Redmond began her studies of frame drums with Glen Velez in 1981. She later formed an all-female frame drumming group called Mob of Angels. She has also performed with Steve Gorn. In 1997 she published a book entitled When the Drummers Were Women: A Spiritual History of Rhythm, a comprehensive history of the frame drum focusing particularly on its use by female performers dating back to ancient times. (New York: Three Rivers Press. ISBN 0-609-80128-7.) The February 2000 issue of DRUM! Magazine listed Layne Redmond as one of the 53 Heavyweight Drummers Who Made A Difference in the '90s.
