Land Whales is an independent alternative rock band from Havana, Cuba[/placformed], recognized as a leading force in the island's emerging post-punk and shoegaze scene. Founded by Martín Schellekens (vocals, guitars, and primary songwriter), the band's lineup has included musicians like Christopher Lázaro Maceiro (drums), Sofia Rama (bass), and Martin Espinosa (guitars). Their sound is a raw, energetic blend of 90s grunge, shoegaze, and noise rock, characterized by distorted guitar layers and lyrics that oscillate between Spanish and English. Their full-length studio album, How to Make a Breakfast, was released in 2026 by the Peruvian label Buh Records. The album received critical acclaim, including a review from Pitchfork, which highlighted the band's ability to record high-quality music despite Cuba's frequent power outages and economic instability. Land Whales were central figures in the Human Noises Fest at Havana's Maxim Rock club in 2023, a landmark event for Cuba's new wave of alternative music. As of late 2024/2025, the band's future remains uncertain. Like many young Cuban artists, the members have faced the challenges of the country's migration crisis; founder Martín Schellekens moved to the Netherlands shortly after finishing their latest album, marking a transition or potential hiatus for the group's activity in Havana. https://landwhales.bandcamp.com User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.
