Artist
Laima Jansone is an improvisation, electroacoustic and folk musician and composer from Rīga, Latvia. She is among the leading virtuoso performers of the Latvian ethnographic lute, with an acknowledged talent in the art of improvisation. Presently, Jansone is a student of the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Music Academy and has been further developing her skills in various master classes such as at Nortrad Ark '09 (Finland) where she advanced her knowledge of the traditional Finnish Kantele and studied improvisation with Pauliina Syrjälä. She also studied the music of Georgia with members of The Shin and studied Vargana with masters of the craft at master classes in Hungary and Austria. Jansone coaxes interpretative resonances from the lute in a unique and personalised performance manner, which reflects an impetuosity and impulsiveness in contrast to an alternative tranquillity and desire to focus on an inner dimension. Improvisation is a major component of Jansone's art - it is always something unique, a surprise and an experience both for performer and audience. Jansone performs on a personally customised electroacoustic lute that offers the possibility of employing additional sound effects. Jansone performs as a solo artist for diverse audiences and has been involved with national and international projects, e.g. Latvijas Lepnums; the annual Diena cultural award Zelta Kartupelis; the 2008 European Person of the Year awards ceremony; the Euroradio Folk into Classics concert at the
