A 15-piece group, Lisbon Underground Music Ensemble (L.U.M.E.) is composed of some of the most experienced Portuguese jazz and classical musicians. L.U.M.E. is inspired by the tradition of the big band – updated in an intelligent, ironic and skilful fashion. Through experimentation and adaptation of rock and classical vocabularies, L.U.M.E. reconstructs the rich history of the Big Band heritage, escaping its more conventional standards to open up new perspectives. The music documented in L.U.M.E.’s work is groovy and abstract. It uses drones and complex counterpoints. It feeds on blues, enters into the realm of erudite music, and acts in layers. L.U.M.E.’s music combines written composition with improvisation, and reaches from funk to textural music, from boogie woogie to impressionist environments... with a Zappa-esque twist. The group includes: Marco Barroso (composition, direction, piano) Manuel Luís Cochofel (flute) Paulo Bernardino (soprano clarinet) João Pedro Silva (soprano saxophone) Tomás Marques (alto saxophone) Gonçalo Prazeres (tenor saxophone) Gabriela Figueiredo (baritone saxophone) Gileno Santana, João Silva and Ricardo Carvalho (trumpet) Rúben da Luz, Eduardo Lála and Mário Vicente (trombone) Miguel Amado (bass) Vicky Marques (drums) User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.
