Band Kopito (eng. hoof), a mix of Mediterranean and Dalmatian sounds, a capella singing and energetic ska/rock/funk, has been founded in 2003 with the idea to create a cheerful band to promote and preserve the dialect of Croatian island Vis. First step were two demo albums – “Muj tovor” (eng. My donkey, 2003) and “Srića” (eng. Hapiness, 2004). In the early years the band has profiled into a lively combination of singing and dancing, and has started working their way up the Croatian scene as an opening act for Stampedo, Gego and Picigin band. In 2006 the band has signed a discography contract with Aquarius Records (Universal Music Group), shortly followed by the first album Riba (eng. Fish), which clearly displays the band’s playfulness, memorable melodies, harmony singing and all the other elements of a life on an island. The band is soon marked as an ethno band, and joined Ethno Section of Croatian Musicians Union. In 2007 Kopito won the recognition and award Zlatna Koogla (eng. Golden Globe) for the best new performer. In the same year, the band began to be regularly included in yearly compilations of WOMEX, World Music Expo, the most important international professional market of world music. In 2008 band has published second album Teotar Akvarelo (eng. Watercolor Theater, Aquarius Records), thus extending the boundaries of Croatian island’s music.
