Klaus Martin Kopitz was born in Stendal in 1955. and grew up in Tangerhütte near Magdeburg. From 1975 to 1980 he studied at the Berlin Academy of Music "Hanns Eisler" in the following subjects Composition, piano and musicology. From 1982 to 1984 he pursued private studies at the Swiss musicologist Prof. Dr. Harry Goldschmidt and from 1985 to 1987 was a master student of Prof. Paul-Heinz Dittrich at the Academy of Arts of the GDR. In 2000 he earned his doctorate at the Chemnitz University of Technology under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Helmut Loos and is since then predominantly as a musicologist. One focus is on source research, especially on Viennese Classicism and Romanticism. Together with Prof. Dr. Rainer Cadenbach, Kopitz founded the Beethoven Research Centre at the Berlin University of the Arts in 2002, which was funded by the German Research Foundation. The two-volume source work "Beethoven from the Perspective of His Contemporaries", published in 2009 by Henle-Verlag, was the result of the collaboration of Prof. Dr. Oliver Korte and Nancy Tanneberger M.A.. From 2006 to 2011 he was also commissioned by the Beethoven House to work on the eighth and final volume of the Beethoven Letter Edition, financed by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation. Since 2012 Kopitz at the Saxon Academy of Sciences in Leipzig has been involved with the complete edition of Robert and Clara Schumann's correspondence, which is published by Dohr Verlag.
