Khan Shushinski (Azerbaijani: Xan Şuşinski; born Isfandiyar Aslan oglu Javanshir; 20 August 1901, Shusha – 18 March 1979, Baku), was a famous Azerbaijani khananda (folk singer), who finalized the formation of the Azeri school of mugam arts. He later taught vocal arts at the Zeynally College of Music in Baku. Khan Shushinsky further developed the mugam music traditions set by Jabbar Karyagdy. The trinity of Jabbar Karyagdy, Seyid Shushinsky (Azerbaijani: Seyid Şuşunski) and Khan Shushinsky is considered to have the most significant influence on the contemporary art of mugam in Azerbaijan. Khan Shushinsky is considered the classical and the greatest performer of "Karabakh Shikeste", famous mugam-type performance popular in Azerbaijan. He became known as a talented composer after writing a number of songs that still remain very popular today, such as "Menden gen gezme" and Ay guzel". But his most famous song is Shushanin daghlari ("The Mountains of Shusha"), dedicated to his native city. Despite Shushinski's relation to the khans of Karabakh, his stage name derives from an episode in his adolescence. In 1918, he and his mugham teacher Islam Abdullayev attended a wedding in the village of Novruzlu (presently in the Agdam Rayon of Azerbaijan), where guests were listened to a gramophone record of the Iranian singer Abul Hasan Khan performing the Kurd Shahnaz variety of mugham.
