Belfast (Northern Ireland), based Ketamine Suns have been writing and producing collectively since 2003 drawing influence from the likes of massive attack, Cocteau Twins, and Portishead to name but a few. Since their formation Ketamine Suns members Oonagh Cassidy, James Murphy and James McShane have been living a reclusive artistic existence honing their sound in studios around the UK and Ireland. The result is a form of trip-hop that marries jazz, electronica and industrial beats with de-tuned keys and sparse guitar, permeated with Oonagh Cassidy’s characteristic Irish vocals. The band, however, do not limit themselves to a particular mood and tracks can range from intensely dreamy soundscapes to dark and gritty distortion laden compositions. Both McShane and Murphy hail from technical backgrounds. Attaining 1st Class Honors Degrees in Music Production, they carve out productions using their own custom built soft-synth and samplers. The two 24 year olds do not limit themselves to programming and sampling alone but experiment playing with an array of instruments within their compositions. In contrast Oonagh comes from much more traditional backgrounds. Miss Cassidy, 27, is an Irish folk singer-songwriter who regularly plays intimate gigs in pub venues across the UK. Her soft lilting vocal style and lush melodic compositions have attracted a loyal following both in Belfast and in her adopted home city of Newcastle.
