With new backing band The Folks, Kent Goolsby’s debut album, “Trophies Of Youth”, is a rollicking ride through American music that draws influence from New Morning-era Bob Dylan, John Prine, and The Band. Kent’s most personal batch of songs ever released, “Trophies Of Youth” tackles coming-of-age themes with a worn but optimistic voice. Lines like “This life ain’t rags to riches, more like rags to rags...” (from Rags To Rags) and “Have I wasted all my time on rhymes? Some are bound for glory, while others are just bound...” (from Losers Sweepstakes) shed light upon the nature of a musician’s life, while other songs such as Natural Disaster and Two By Two, showcase Kent’s fingerpicking ability mixed with world-weary humor. The Folks arrangements complement Joey Kneiser’s organic production style throughout the album. Shakey Fowlkes’ drumming propels the record forward with deep grooves, supplemented by Dan Eubanks’ powerhouse bass playing. Steve Daly’s jack-of-all-trades guitar playing ranges from the Robbie Robertson like chops on Pleased (You Can’t Be) to the scorched earth, Neil Young-influenced solo on Losers Sweepstakes.
