Katie Thiroux is a bassist and vocalist of outstanding talent and determination. Coming from a musical family in Los Angeles, she was surrounded by music; beginning with violin lessons at age 4 then switching to the acoustic bass at age 8. While continuing her studies on bass, Katie explored both jazz and classical vocal styles; landing principal roles in the LA Opera and Opera Pacifica by the age of 10. Captivated by an early recording of Lionel Hampton, Katie was driven to pursue her love for jazz and began studying privately with jazz vocalist Tierney Sutton at the age of 12. While attending the highly regarded Hamilton High School Academy of Music, Katie garnished several accolades that demonstrated her growing talent and devotion to jazz. At 17, she was recognized for her outstanding skills and honored with the coveted Los Angeles Jazz Society’s “Shelly Manne New Talent Award.” For four consecutive years she participated in the Grammy/Gibson Baldwin Jazz Ensembles and she was honored by the National Foundation for the Advancement of the Arts (NFAA) in 2006 and also won DownBeat awards for bass and voice. Katie was accepted to mentorships at the Brubeck Institute and the Vail Jazz Workshop where she met one of her current mentors, John Clayton. While still attending high school, she was an active bassist working with stalwarts of the Los Angeles jazz scene such as Ron Stout, Jack Nimitz, Charles Owens and Barbara Morisson. In her final year of hig
