After the recent release of her new single and video clip, ‘The Way You Are’, which is making radio waves around the country, Kate Vigo is making a name for herself in the music scene. With a sound that effortlessly sits astride soulful, sweet and stylish all at once, Kate is joined by amazing ensemble musicians known as ‘The Underground Orchestra’. The fast rising vocalist, and highest album selling performer of the 2008 Melbourne Jazz Fringe Festival only came onto the scene in earnest some five years ago on the open stage of the renowned Dizzy’s Jazz Club. Vigo, runner up in the 2007 Independent Music Awards (and the only Australian nominated for the singer/songwriter category), led the late Australian music icon Clifford Hocking to remark: ‘Kate’s singing bowled me over in the same way that Kate Ceberano’s did when I first heard her …she is a remarkable talent.’ Kate finished a degree in fashion design before undertaking a bachelor in voice improvisation at The VCA and, while some worlds apart, it can be noted for the parallels found in her music. Weaving together a distinct array of sounds, from Billie Holiday to Feist, by way of Prince and Aretha Franklin, Kate’s eclectic mix of influences create a foundation on which she builds her distinct and yet accessible compositions.
