When the touring company of The Fiery Furnaces swapped out Toshi Yano for ex-Sebadoh plucker Jason Loewenstein, they sacrificed a bit of swagger and versatility (Yano was second-chair keyboardist). Some of those qualities were transferred to Yano's new band Kapow!, whose comic-book sound-effect name foreshadows their era-influence of choice. Working the fictional Nuggets outtake angle, "Make You Mine" avoids being nostalgia-drunk by DeLoreaning a blippy synth into the garage; harmonized bored-slur vocals and isolated feedback bursts cloud up the sunny-day lyrics.
